Oman: authorities, registration and import checks

Not legal advice. This page points to official sources and explains the questions to ask them. It does not state that any product is legal or illegal to import, and rules change — confirm with the authority before acting.

Ministry of Health — Drug Safety Center

The ministry's portal links to Drug Safety Center guidance documents, including guidance on withdrawing, suspending, refusing or cancelling a pharmaceutical product's marketing authorisation, on changes to pharmaceutical products, and on complaints about its regulatory decisions.

Marketing authorisation is the key concept

Oman's Ministry of Health publishes Drug Safety Center guidance built around marketing authorisation — the permission for a pharmaceutical product to be sold. A compound without a marketing authorisation is not an available medicine in Oman; whether it can be imported for laboratory research is a separate question for the ministry.

Questions to put to the authority

  • Does the compound hold an Omani marketing authorisation?
  • Does a non-authorised compound need ministry approval before import for laboratory research?
  • Which documents should accompany such a shipment through customs?
